InstallAnywhere sets the standard for multiplatform
software installation, continuing to stay far ahead
of the competition by delivering an ideal mix of
power, ease of use, and functionality. By deploying
and configuring applications onto the platforms
that run the enterprise, the award winning
InstallAnywhere family has become the preferred
choice of developers worldwide.
New Features in InstallAnywhere 7:
J2SE 5.0 support
Sun describes J2SE 5.0 (also known as Java 1.5) as
"the most significant upgrade to the Java platform
and programming language since its initial release
nearly one decade ago." InstallAnywhere 7 fully
supports Sun J2SE 5.0. InstallAnywhere developers
can bundle J2SE 5.0 with their installer, and have
their application run against it.
Windows Installer (MSI) build option
InstallAnywhere 7 introduces integration with
InstallAnywhere.NET. This enables InstallAnywhere
the ability to generate Windows Installer (MSI)
packages. Developers can also now export their
InstallAnywhere project as an InstallAnwyhere.NET
project.
Installer support for digital signatures (Windows
XP SP2 compliance)
Security is a conce for every software developer.
InstallAnywhere 7 introduces the ability to
digitally sign Windows installers. Digital
signatures give end users the added security that
comes with knowing that an installer came from a
trusted source. It also prevents your customer from
seeing a "Unknown Publisher" waing when they
launch installers on Windows XP Service Pack 2. For
more information about the benefits of digitally
signed software click here.
Strict Java Virtual Machine selection
You can now specify the exact version of the Java
Virtual Machine that the installer or
LaunchAnywhere will run against. This is extremely
helpful for developers who do not want to bundle a
Java Virtual Machine with their application but
still want the application to run against a
particular Virtual Machine.
Shared components
With InstallAnywhere 7 components can be shared
between different applications. A component will be
installed if it doesnt already exist on the
system, however if the component has already been
installed by another application it is registered
as shared. The uninstaller will not remove a
component if it is still needed by another
application. This is essential if you are
installing a suite of applications that share
required resources. You can even share a Java
Virtual Machine between applications.
Cross product dependencies
InstallAnywhere 7 introduces the concept of
cross product dependencies. Dependencies allow for
the conditional installation of specific software
applications based on the current system
configuration. This is essential for flexible suite
installations, and ensures that an application will
work as designed when installed.
Additional platform support
InstallAnywhere expands its industry leading
platform support by adding support for AIX 5.3L
(both 32 bit and 64 bit), SUSE Enterprise Server 9
and SUSE 9 Professional, Solaris 10, Red Hat
Enterprise Server 4.0, and Red Hat Fedora.
Installers have also been tested and are supported
on Windows, Linux and Solaris AMD 64 machines. It
is fully compliant with the requirements of
Microsofts "Designed for Windows XP" and Apples
"Built for Mac OS X" certifications, as well as
meeting the standards for Linux, AIX, HP UX,
Solaris, and Tru64. Of course, InstallAnywhere
still supports the entire Windows family
(95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003), IRIX, FreeBSD, and all
other Java enabled platforms. Whats more,
InstallAnywhere offers complete support for all
Java editions and J2EE implementations from Sun,
IBM, BEA, and others.
Action Groups
InstallAnywhere 7 introduces a revolutionary way to
design your installers with the introduction of
Action Groups. This is by far the most popular
feature request Zero G, a Macrovision Company, has
received from existing customers. Action Groups
provide the ability to logically group a set of
actions or panels in Pre Install, Post Install,
Pre Uninstall and Post Uninstall. Rules applied to
the Action Group affect all the actions or panels
it contains. Actions Groups make InstallAnywhere
projects more manageable and easier to understand.
Available in InstallAnywhere Enterprise Edition
only.
Dynamic Merge Modules
The new "Import Dynamic Merge Module" option
provides the ability to import Panels and Actions
from a Merge Module into a master project as an
Action Group. These actions and panels will
automatically refreshed when you load or build the
master installer. This is essential if your Merge
Modules require configuration. Available in
InstallAnywhere Enterprise Edition only.
Improved Installer Merge Module communication
Merge Modules now have the ability to pass
variables back to the master installer, and allows
you to store the stderr and stdout of a Merge
Module as InstallAnywhere variables. This is
especially useful when determining if a Merge
Module was successfully installed.
More flexible Installer UI customization options
You can customize the look and feel of the
installer more than ever before. InstallAnywhere 7
gives you more fine grain control of the colors you
want to use in your installer. This enables you the
ability to provide an even better looking end user
experience to your customers.
More Uninstaller actions and panels
InstallAnywhere 6 introduced customizable
installers. InstallAnywhere 7 takes this concept a
step further by adding a whole series of new
actions and panels to the Pre Uninstall and
Post Uninstall phase. These actions include the
Execute Script/Batch File action, the Display
Message Panel, the Find Component in Registry
action, and more. Available in InstallAnywhere
Enterprise Edition only.
Improved Source Control Management Software
Compliance
InstallAnywhere 7 complies with SCMs like Perforce
and Clearcase better than ever. You can now easily
check both InstallAnywhere, InstallAnywhere project
files, and its resources into source control. You
no longer need to check InstallAnywhere out of
cource control to run builds. This helps you focus
on creating installers instead of focusing on how
to incorporate InstallAnywhere into your build
process.
Major Advanced Designer enhancements
The InstallAnywhere Advanced Designer runs against
the Sun J2SE 5.0 platform on Windows, Solaris, and
Linux. Thanks to J2SE 5.0, the Advanced Designer is
faster, more responsive, and easier to use than
ever. The Advanced Designer also now supports the
latest operating systems like RedHat Enterprise
Server 3, RedHat Advanced Server 4, SUSE Enterprise
Server 9, SUSE Professional 9.1, and AIX 5.3L.
